And so we go from the Coastguard cottages to the Tudor cottages.
Tudor cottages
The date on the wall is 1539, possibly from the date of a document relating to the cottages.
They are numbered 1, 3, 5 and 7 Exeter Road, which predates Iddesleigh Terrace and the Bends and therefore this was the main road.
The building was owned by the Tapley family, many of whom fished in Newfoundland.
This was followed by the Tripes who farmed Strand Hill Farm owned by John Pidgley of Elm Grove House.
In 2004, the cottages were restored and briefly opened to the public.
There were two bread ovens and a hearth for making clotted cream.
The thatch was dated to around 1450, and was also blackened, indicating it had had a fire in the middle which let out smoke through an opening in the roof.
So the cottages probably predate the date on the wall.
Lammas Park House
The house located on Priory Road has an interesting door, pleasant verandah with iron columns and a canopy.
It was built by a Mr Manning, who could be a relative of John Manning of Lawn and Manor House.
Passing through a number of owners/ renters, it became a hotel in 1957 with 11 bedrooms and three bathrooms with a tariff of seven to nine guineas a week.
It changed to a top bed-and-breakfast in 2000 and continues at present.
