Your guide to the Platinum Jubilee in Dawlish

Dawlish is set to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this week with a variety of special events, street parties and more.

The Platinum Jubilee, which marks 70 years since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne, will be celebrated over four days from Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 June. Thursday and Friday are bank holidays.

You can get a special souvenir programme for the events in Dawlish for £3 from The Manor House on Old Town Street, Presents of Dawlish, and The Puzzled Sweet Shop on the Strand as well as other outlets, and also from the Dawlish Town Council gazebo on the Lawn during the Jubilee celebrations.

Here's our rundown of what's on in Dawlish over the long weekend:

Thursday 2 June

The first day of events (Dawlish Town Council)

'Turn the Tide' (10am to 10pm, centred around Dawlish Lawn, one-day family event, free)

  • Stalls, talks, workshops and more, as 'a celebration of seaside living'.
  • Live music.
  • Various environmental and ethical charities, organisations and businesses will be present.

Children's art workshop (11.45am to 12.45pm, the Strand Centre) 

  • Use crayons to create an undersea picture then a blue/green/turquoise watercolour wash-over, for children aged 5-11 years.

Kids fun run with Dawlish Coasters (1pm, Dawlish Lawn, register on the day)

Adult fun run with Dawlish Coasters (2pm, from Dawlish Lawn, pre-register)

Film screenings at Shaftesbury Theatre (1pm to 2pm and 4pm to 5pm)

  • Films 'Smog of the Sea' and 'Life on the Edge' will be shown at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Beacon-lighting (from 9.35pm, Dawlish Lawn)

  • There will be a piper, bugler, and a playing of the Song for the Commonwealth recorded by Dawlish Choral Society.

Friday 3 June

The second day of events (Dawlish Town Council)

Bell-ringing, 70 minutes for 70 years (10.30am, St Gregory's Church)

  • Members of the public are welcome to come and watch Dawlish Bell Ringers in action.

Sherlock Holmes Trail (11am-4pm, Dawlish Lawn)

Face painting (11am-4pm, Dawlish Lawn)

Refreshers fair (11am-5pm, Dawlish Lawn)

  • Over 30 local organisations will have stalls and will be available to tell you what they do

Street market (11am-5pm, The Strand)

Family fun time with Busy Bees playgroup (12pm to 3pm, St Mary's Hall, Dawlish Warren)

Punch and Judy (12pm, 2pm and 3pm, Dawlish Warren)

Fly-past by Lancaster Bomber (3.22pm)

Grand Jubilee Quiz (7.15pm for 7.30pm start, finish at 9pm, marquee on the Lawn)

  • Organised by Dawlish Local History Group, there will be picture quizzes on Dawlish, the Queen's coronation, facts about royalty, Dawlish's royal connections, and British history since 1952. now and in the past, Queen's Coronation, Royalty facts, Dawlish Royal connections, British history since 1952.
  • Teams for up to four, entry £2 per person. Proceeds to Dawlish Museum.

Saturday 4 June

The third day of events (Dawlish Town Council)

Heritage vehicles (10am to 4pm, Dawlish Lawn)

Heritage cycle ride (10am, Dawlish Lawn)

  • Heritage cycles will arrive and parade before going to Luscombe.
  • Pre-register here.
  • 1950s costumes encouraged, prizes for best-dressed.

Coronation film clips on giant screen (12.45pm to 1.15pm, 6pm, Dawlish Lawn)\

Dawlish band Maddy and the Chaps live (2pm to 4pm, Powderham Farm Shop)

Beach Clean with Dawlish Against Plastic (3pm, Boat Cove)

Fly-past by Lancaster Bomber (4.45pm)

'Encanto' film on giant screen (7pm, Dawlish Lawn)

Sunday 5 June

The fourth day of events (Dawlish Town Council)

Punch and Judy shows (11.30am to 12pm, 2pm to 2.30pm, Dawlish Lawn)

Churches Together in Dawlish and District service (12pm, bandstand on Dawlish Lawn)

The Crown Parade awards (2.30pm to 3pm, Dawlish Lawn)

  • Local children have been tasked with making crowns, in any way they see fit. All entrants to the competition will be able to take part in a 'crown parade' on the Lawn.
  • Prizes will be awarded to three categories - under-fives, those aged five to 10, and children over 10.
  • The judges will be led by Cllr Mayne, with no strict criteria for their assessment.

Dawlish Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Grand Finale Singalong (7pm to 9pm, Dawlish Lawn/ Marquee)

  • A singalong of songs, including the Queen's favourite musical numbers, and songs for the occasion.
