Dawlish Town Council has announced a new competition for children to coincide with the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next month.

Local children have been tasked with making crowns, in any way they see fit. All entrants to the competition will be able to take part in a 'crown parade' at 2.30pm on Sunday 5 June on the Lawn.

Mayor of Dawlish Cllr Lisa Mayne said: "We really want people to let their imaginations run riot and to come up with some stunning crowns to be worn at our Jubilee Sunday family party.

"Raid the cupboards and the kitchen drawer that's always overflowing with bits and bobs, get the glue gun out, pinch a coat hanger from the wardrobe, dig out the feather boa - do whatever you have to do but make something fabulous that will make us smile.

"We want to see some right royal results at the party on June 5 with people looking truly regal in their home-made crowns. We are hoping it will be great fun and put a smile on people's faces."

Prizes will be awarded to three categories - under-fives, those aged five to 10, and children over 10.

The judges will be led by Cllr Mayne, with no strict criteria for their assessment.

There will be crown-making workshops announced soon at Dawlish Library at the end of May.
