Makeover for Dawlish footpath 'pocket park'

Network Rail is giving a small "pocket park" on the footpath from the A379 down to the sea wall at Coastguards Cottages in Dawlish a makeover.

It comes as part of the overall sea wall project. Upgrades include a new footpath, handrail, wildflower turf and new shrubs and flowers.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "The pocket park near Coastguards Cottages is being given a makeover as part of our Dawlish sea wall project.

"We've been putting down a new footpath, installing a handrail, wildflower turf and planting new shrubs and flowers.

"The footpath is open, except for when new surfacing is being laid, but part of the park area remains closed for now while the turf and plants bed in.

"The benches have been removed for safekeeping and will be returned when the work is finished."

What is the progress of other projects at the railway?

Dawlish's new £80m sea wall is now complete and open to the public.

new accessible footbridge with lifts at Dawlish railway station is expected to be ready by the end of the year.

Work on a rockfall shelter north of Parson's Tunnel between Dawlish and Holcombe began in late 2021 and is due to be complete in autumn 2023.

Netting and fencing work on the cliffs between Dawlish and Holcombe to protect the railway from falling debris is due to start.
