Members of two of Dawlish and District u3a's interest groups were busy over the festive period in the town, from clearing and 'rewilding' St Gregory's churchyard to playing boules on the Lawn.

Rewilding the churchyard at St Gregory's

Members of the u3a Natural History Group and two representatives from Teignbridge District Council spent two days in December working on a project to clear and rewild the churchyard of St Gregory's.

The council has responsibility for managing this and other similar churchyards in the district, but there is a lack of specific funding.

The long-term aim of the project is to enhance biodiversity in the area.

Boules on the Lawn

Members of the u3a's Boules Group went out and played boules on the Lawn recently, and meet twice a month either outdoors or indoors if the weather is bad.

A spokesperson for Dawlish and District u3a said: "Most people associate the sport ... with lazy, carefree, warm summer evenings in a shady square somewhere deep in rural France, so the sight of enthusiastic players wrapped up in winter clothes on the Lawn in the heart of Dawlish might come as something of a surprise!

"Overcoming the elements makes the reward of the coffee or hot chocolate feel all the more deserved. As can be seen from the urgent conversation taking place in this picture, players enjoy each other's company – but they do like to win as well!"

Dawlish & District u3a has over 160 members and around 20 interest groups that meet throughout the month, with subjects such as great lives, art appreciation, French conversation, natural history, wine appreciation, Scrabble, painting and drawing, and gardens & gateaux.
