Plans for more than 350 homes on the outskirts of Dawlish are likely to get the go-ahead next week.

Developers want to build the latest phase of a huge housing area which will have more than 860 homes when complete, and members of the Teignbridge Council planning committee are being recommended to give the green light.

They will assess two separate applications to build at Gatehouse Farm, one for 149 homes on a piece of land off Langdon Road and another for 205 homes in the next field.

The land has long been earmarked as part of a 'high quality landmark development' for what is described as the 'gateway' to the town.

Outline planning permission has already been granted, and the planning meeting next week will look at details of the latest phases.

A number of houses on other parts of the site have already been completed and are being occupied.

Dawlish Town Council, however, wants planners to turn down both the new applications until issues around sewage processing and green spaces are resolved.

The access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale of the proposed new developments will come under scrutiny, with the latest plans coming after two rounds of consultation.

Of the 354 homes planned in total, 287 will be for sale on the open market and 67 will be affordable housing.

An officers' report to the committee says the benefit of the homes outweighs conflicts over green spaces and the provision of play areas

Dawlish Town Council has objected, saying it has concerns over the fresh water supply and sewage processing for the site, which also has a lack of green areas.

But it added: "This council has no objection to the houses being built providing the infrastructure, plans and treatment plants are put in place first."

Taylor Wimpey and Bloor Homes are involved in building the houses.
