Five local fire stations were sent to Dawlish this morning (Monday 23 May) at around 9am after a member of the public reported that smoke was coming from a shopfront.

Firefighters from Dawlish, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Teignmouth and Danes Castle in Exeter were all mobilised, but when they arrived in Dawlish the fire was already out.

They cut away part of a shop's signage, and checked the flat above, as precautions.

A spokesperson for Teignmouth Fire Station said: "Our control staff received a phone call from the public stating smoke issuing from a shopfront in Dawlish, they sent us plus a number of fire engines from the local area Dawlish Fire Station, Newton Abbot Fire Station, Torquay Fire Station and an aerial platform from Danes Castle Fire Station - Exeter.

"On arrival it was confirmed the fire was out but crews cut away part of the shop signage and checked the flat above for any possible fire spread."
