Remembrance under lockdown

A scaled-down, socially-distanced service of remembrance took place at the War Memorial on Wednesday, November 4.

Instead of the usual parade and church service, a small group of civic dignitaries, members of the Royal British Legion and representatives of the Army, Navy and Air Force attended an outdoor service in the Memorial Garden, led by the Rev Dallas Ayling.

Enter Curios and you're surrounded by displays of brightly-hued clothes and accessories, ornaments, dreamcatchers and crystals, shiny jewellery, iridescent gemstones; countless fascinating items that you need to get a close look at to recognise their inherent qualities.

But rather than seeming cluttered or over-full, the shop has a strangely relaxing vibe, helped by the gentle smell of incense.

The community groups collectively known as Helping Dawlish are well prepared to support local residents during lockdown, the town council has been told.

At the full council meeting on Wednesday, November 4, Angie Weatherhead from Helping Dawlish said the 14 organisations involved had been meeting regularly to make contingency plans for a second Covid-19 clampdown.

'A safe and welcoming place to visit' has been the role of the Open Daw community centre for the last few months, providing a venue for people to meet friends or chat with volunteers in Covid-secure surroundings.

Dawlish Nub News visited the centre and met co-ordinators Olivia Gore and Anthony Butler just three days before the announcement of the second lockdown, starting on November 5.
