Two representatives from Devon County Council, Lucy Mottram and Bobby Hughes, spoke to members of Dawlish & District u3a (University of the Third Age) via Zoom recently to tell them about the importance of reducing household waste.

In an interesting and upbeat presentation, members learnt that a worryingly large 30.1% of residential bin waste was from the kitchen, and 40.8% of waste in black bins could have been recycled.

The statistics, which provide the position as of 17 May, show that there have been 1,169,431 vaccines delivered in Devon, with 729,168 being a first dose, and 440,263 being a second dose.

Across Devon and Cornwall, more than 70 per cent of adults have had their first dose, with around 45 per cent having had a second dose.

A total of 108 new cases were confirmed across Devon and Cornwall last week – with the total since the start of the pandemic at 48,287 – although the numbers may be slightly higher given Tuesday's figures saw a raft of false positives removed from the dataset giving a negative total for the day.

Even so, it is the lowest weekly total since 154 were recorded in the week of 6-12 September, and based on daily averages, would be below that figure even without the false positives being removed from totals.

Plans are progressing well for Dawlish's one-day music festival, which will take place – Covid permitting – on Saturday, July 31.

The Breakout Festival will see live bands playing at the Marine Tavern and the Teignmouth Inn from 2pm until 11pm. Each band will play for 50 minutes and the performances will alternate between the two venues, with 10 minutes between each set to give the audience time to drink up and move from one pub to the other.
