Teignbridge coronavirus infection rates by age

The number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall last week was unchanged from the previous seven days, as infection rates remain among the lowest in England.

A total of 132 new cases were confirmed across the two counties for the second successive week – the total since the start of the pandemic stands at 48,551 – with Plymouth and Cornwall seeing an increase while cases in Devon have fallen.

This pandemic has taken its toll on our mental health and wellbeing. In early 2021 more than one in five adults reported experiencing depression. Some groups have been worse affected than others with 43 per cent of young women reporting experiencing depression over the same period. Though England is returning to some normality, some may not see their mental health troubles ease alongside restrictions.

We must ensure that mental health services and organisations are equipped to deal with the demand that they are seeing now and are prepared to help people as we rebuild. Modelling suggests that this increase in mental health service demand may go on for some time, so we will need to get this right to stop mental health problems spiralling to crisis point.

No deaths relating to coronavirus in Devon have been recorded in the most recent weekly figures, for the first time since mid-September.

The figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), which relate to the week of May 15 to May 21 but registered up to May 29, show that none of the 196 deaths registered in Devon had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

Early in May and for the last five or six days of the month, high pressure brought fine and latterly some fairly warm weather across the district. For most of the month, however, low pressure dominated the weather patterns as a series of depressions moved across the UK. On the 3rd, 9th and 20th the depressions were unusually deep for the time of year. The associated weather systems brought periods of wet and at times windy weather across the Dawlish and Teignmouth district. Most notable was the wet period between the 8th and the 15th. On just two days, the 12 and 13th, enough rain fell to equal the average for a normal May.

The proposed sites around Dawlish

Teignbridge residents are being urged to help the council find the 'least damaging' sites for thousands of new homes across the district – including around 1,000 that are allocated to the Dawlish area.

More than 100 sites have been identified as sites for future housing as part of the Teignbridge Local Plan that will run until 2040.
