Torquay thatched roof blaze attended by Teignmouth firefighters was arson, fire service says

Update 5.16pm: Fire crews are now dampening down the area and checking for hotspots, and one fire engine remains at the scene.

It was started deliberately, according to the fire service.

A spokesperson said: "We have one fire engine and the aerial ladder platform at the scene. Crews are dampening down the area and checking for hot spots.

"The fire investigation officer has confirmed the fire was deliberate and we are supporting the police with their investigations."

Firefighters from Teignmouth have been helping tackle a thatched roof fire in Torquay.

Fire crews were called out at around 4.35pm yesterday (Tuesday 31 May), and the blaze is still ongoing.

As many as 12 fire appliances and 16 different fire stations, including Torquay, Paignton, Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh, Chagford, Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, are at the scene in the Shiphay district in the north of Torquay.

Several specialist fire appliances are also in attendance, as well as police officers.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has described the thatched roof as 'well alight'.

A spokesperson said: "Fire control have received multiple calls to a thatch fire in Torquay.

"We have 12 appliances, multiple supporting/specialists appliances and officers on scene. Crews have confirmed this building is well alight and this information will be updated regularly."

The fire service has also warned residents to close their doors and windows due to the smoke.
