Teignmouth firefighters put out a bonfire that was spreading to the surrounding hedgerow yesterday (Tuesday 12 July) at around 1pm.

One fire engine was sent to the scene in Coombe Road, Shaldon, and firefighters then requested help from another appliance from Torquay.

They said that the heat made it more difficult to ensure the fire would not spread further - and warned the public not to have bonfires due to the fact that vegetation is so dry at the moment.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "One appliance from Teignmouth was sent to a bonfire out of control spreading to the surrounding hedgerow.

"On arrival they requested a second fire appliance which came from Torquay to assist with extinguishing the fire.

"Crews worked hard to prevent further fire spread which was made more difficult for them due to the high temperatures we had today.

"With further sunshine and high temperatures it's advisable not to have bonfires, due to much of the vegetation being so dry around."
