An investigation is under way after all five of Dawlish's black swan cygnets died, along with a 12-month-old bird.

On Friday, November 6, the Dawlish Waterfowl wardens posted on Facebook to announce the sad news that two of the cygnets had been found dead near their nest the previous night.

No sign of an attack

Wardens Don Phillips and Stephen Cole said they thought they had been killed by the cold weather, as there was no sign that they had been attacked.

On Sunday, November 8, the wardens posted an update saying that the other cygnets had also died, along with the older swan.

Vets who visited to check on their condition put another 'very poorly' swan on medication.

Investigation under way into the deaths

The wardens said: "We do not know the cause, and investigations are underway.

"We will keep you updated as we know more."

Local residents have posted comments expressing sadness at the news.
