Dog control measures could be tightened up in Dawlish, following the attack on a cygnet a week ago.

A dog that was not on a short lead attacked the cygnet on Saturday, April 17, leaving it with puncture wounds.

The little bird recovered after being treated with antibiotics, but the attack raised the issue of stricter enforcement of the dogs-on-leads rule.

Next month the town council's Civic Amenities Committee will receive a detailed report on ways to enforce that rule, and also to tackle dog fouling.

The report will outline the options for working with potentially both Teignmouth Town Council and Teignbridge District Council on the issue, and the possible costs involved.

The town council will also discuss with Teignbridge the options for new signage to make people aware of the rules, and this information will be brought to the meeting.

The district council is currently reviewing the current Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) relating to dog control. Town and parish councils and members of the public will be able to give their views via an online survey.
