Plans for a new four-screen cinema in Market Square, Newton Abbot have been submitted to the district council.

The application on behalf of Scott Cinemas is for a purpose-built two-storey building. It would have four screens on the upper level and space on the ground floor for restaurants and cafes.

Some of the modern extension to the Market Hall building would reportedly have to be demolished for the new cinema. The buildings currently hosting New Look, the former Shauls Bakery and the upstairs link to Clarks would also be demolished. Teignbridge District Council has said that before any demolition takes place, it would discuss short- and long-term relocation options with tenants.

Executive Member for Business Cllr Nina Jeffries said: "This is an exciting stage in regenerating the town centre and making it a more vibrant place where more people want to visit. If planning is approved, residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a high-quality cinematic experience and a choice of films to suit everyone."

If approval is given, work is expected to start in early 2023. The new cinema would then be ready to open in the middle of 2024.
