Dawlish now has two new electric vehicle charging points at Barton Hill car park.

Three spaces have been used to create the EV charging bays, at which two vehicles can be charged at the same time.

The charge points are reportedly compatible with all makes of electric vehicle, and can charge a 50kWh battery in two to four hours and provide a range of up to 200 miles of driving distance.

The cost to charge such a battery fully at Barton Hill car park is around £17.50 plus normal parking charges, according to the district council. Drivers can pay via the Scottish Power app.

The charge points in Dawlish are the first of around 80 due to be installed in the coming months across Devon, including at Eastcliff car park in Teignmouth and Newfoundland Way and Forde House in Newton Abbot.

It comes as part of the £1.3m 'Deletti' programme, which is largely funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Described as 'an essential part of Devon's Carbon Plan', the charge points are being introduced to tackle vehicle carbon emissions.

Teignbridge Executive Member for Climate Change Cllr Jackie Hook said: "The availability of rapid charging points is a key factor in people deciding to switch to electric vehicles, so the implementation of this programme is an important step forward in securing our carbon reduction goals.

"I hope we will be able to have the Newton Abbot and Teignmouth car park charging points available in the near future boosting the number in our car parks across the district by eight."

Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport Cllr Andrea Davis said: "On-road transportation makes up a large percentage of Devon's carbon emissions, meaning taking petrol and diesel cars off the roads could make a significant impact towards our goal of net zero by 2050.

"Providing reliable electric vehicle charging points helps us to facilitate our community's involvement in reducing their personal carbon footprints, from which everyone will benefit."
