A planning application to turn the former Beachcomber cafe on Teignmouth seafront into an all-day eatery has been submitted to Teignbridge District Council.

The building, which was damaged by a fire in 2017, would be renamed 'The Captain's Table' and see several minor structural changes.

The plans were submitted on behalf of the owners of Teignmouth's Finn McCools restaurant and Woolacombe's The Captain's Table.

The new 88-seat venue would be leased by the district council and aims to be open all year round.

It would be open all day serving breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as teas, coffees, snacks and drinks, alongside a bar area and takeaway service looking onto the Den.

Refurbishment works planned for the space include improved access to the Den from the promenade, a unisex toilet block, eight public bike racks, beach showers, a customer lift between floors, and more.

The public toilets on the ground floor would close and Teignmouth Town Council plans to relocate these to the nearby former aquarium with a separate planning application submitted. The district council has confirmed it would provide temporary loos if there is a gap in provision.

Executive Member for Corporate Resources Cllr Richard Keeling said: "We had an excellent response from the formal tendering process which took place earlier this year and chose The Captain's Table as the best option for Teignmouth.

"The incoming tenants are showing their commitment to the town by not only taking a 20-year lease but by undertaking a major refurbishment of the building.

"Their plans are exciting, will cater for both local people, visitors and holidaymakers, contributing to the town's economic growth and prosperity all year round and not just in the holiday season."

Business owner Peter Royle said: "We have been working in Teignmouth for over six years and are excited to be given the opportunity to 'strengthen the bench' of the town's hospitality sector.

"The promenade is such a special place. The Captain's Table will provide a new opportunity to bring light and energy to this iconic location. With that, all year-round enjoyment throughout the day and into the evening. "

If planning permission is granted, the hope is that work will be complete and the new eatery able to open next spring.
