New allotments proposed for Dawlish

Local News by Philippa Davies 23rd Jul 2021

More allotments could be created in the parish to meet a high demand.

Dawlish town council is going to be asked to approve a proposal to seek suitable land for leasing out to local residents who want to grow fruit and vegetables.

The Civic Amenities Committee heard that there's a long waiting list for plots at Brownsbrook Allotments, and that neither Teignbridge District nor Devon County Council has any land available.

But the committee, meeting on Wednesday, February 17, agreed that it would be good to find an alternative way of providing allotments.

Cllr Val Mawhood said: "Some of us must know local landowners who might have a suitable patch."

Cllr Rosie Dawson said the existing Brownsbrook allotments are a 'hidden asset' which are proving extremely beneficial to their tenants at this time.

She said she walks past them every day and they are 'looking amazing' and providing 'a real sense of community'.

The committee unanimously agreed to take the proposal to the town council so that the quest for new allotment sites can be put into action.
