Network Rail apologises ahead of 12-week Dawlish colonnade underpass closure
Network Rail has apologised ahead of a closure of the colonnade underpass in Dawlish which could last up to 12 weeks.
The railway company has said the closure is necessary for public safety, and it will enable engineers to install 20m foundations for a new bridge to connect two sections of the sea wall and for a channel for Dawlish Water to flow out to sea.
The underpass will be closed from the 'week beginning Monday 13 June'. The beach and promenade along Marine Parade will stay open, with access via the footbridge at Kennaway Tunnel.
The work will allow the second section of the sea wall to reopen to the public in September, Network Rail added.
Network Rail Senior Sponsor Julie Gregory said: "I would like to apologise for any disruption the closure of the colonnade underpass may cause and sincerely thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and understanding while we complete this critical, final stage of construction.
"I appreciate this closure will be disappointing for the community, especially for people with accessibility needs or those with pushchairs and particularly during the busier summer months.
"However, we will never compromise on the safety of the public or our colleagues, and to ensure we remain on course to complete the second section of sea wall and open the entire promenade and both beaches in September, it is imperative this work is completed now."
The company says it will make 'every effort' to finish the work sooner where possible, and the underpass may sometimes be open during the construction.
