In just two days, more than 250 people have joined a Dawlish Facebook group set up to collect aid for Ukrainian refugees and their pets.

More than half a million people have now fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to the UN.

Founded by Phil Cole, Rosie Dawson, Rosie Stott and Robin Stott on 27 February, the group 'Ukraine: Dawlish Cares' now has 256 members at the time of writing.

Founder Phil Cole said that they have been 'overwhelmed' by the response.

Speaking to Nub News about why the group was set up, he said: "It was set up out of the desire to do something positive to help people (and pets) fleeing Ukraine.

"We, like everyone else, couldn't quite believe what we were seeing, hearing and reading in the news. I have a friend as well as former colleagues and students from Ukraine which has fuelled my determination."

What will the group be doing?

The group will be setting up collection points in the town for donations, and then shipping them out to the Ukrainian border.

Mr Cole added: "We are linking in with other groups and an animal charity to transport parcels to Romania initially and then possibly Moldova.

"Our Facebook page also acts as a portal where people can post details of other individuals and groups who are making journeys over to the Ukrainian border."

Collection locations have not yet been announced, but items required can be seen on the Facebook group.
