A swan-themed throne carved from a tree stump on Dawlish Lawn was officially unveiled this morning (Tuesday 20 September).

The seat was sculpted by Andrew Frost, who has also completed other works at Dawlish Countryside Park and Decoy Country Park.

The stump used for the carving was that of a mature horse chestnut tree felled earlier this year due to it being "in very poor condition and almost dead".

Dawlish Town Council asked for the stump to be left for a carving to be made, and asked the public what they wanted to see in a consultation.

Mayor of Dawlish Cllr Lisa Mayne said: "I can't believe how lovely this looks.

"I believe it was Cllr [Rosie] Dawson's idea to keep the stump here... I think the carver has done the most amazing job.

"There's gullies down the side for the water to run off, so it's not going to rot - I think it will be a long time here."

Cllr Val Mawhood, also present, said: "I just think he's done a tremendous job, especially since when he came to do it, it turned out that the centre of the tree was rotten... and he's done what he could with it.

"The cushion, soft as it might look, is actually hardwood, it's a redwood, sequioa. So that is in place because he couldn't carve the seat out of the tree.

"He's done everything he possibly could with it, and I think it's wonderful."

The project was funded by Dawlish Town Council and Devon County Councillor Martin Wrigley's locality budget.
