Devon County Council is currently replacing around 40 streetlights on Teignmouth seafront, with work expected to be done by the first week of June.
The replacement streetlights will be made of galvanised steel and use low-energy LED lights which can be controlled remotely. They will also have power supplies to enable CCTV to be added, together with additional lighting for special occasions, eg. Christmas.
Councillor David Cox (Lib Dem, Teignmouth) said: "It's good that new lighting will support the town council's CCTV and have interactive features that will complement community events."
Teignmouth Town Councillor Peter Williams, said: "The new features the street lighting will bring to our seafront will have huge benefits around carbon reduction and environmental impact and will bring benefits for all the residents and visitors alike."
The county council removed 10 streetlights in October 2021 after defects were found during routine inspections. The remainder of the lights are reportedly being monitored but will need replacing 'within the next 10 years'.
