Three of Dawlish's young female adult swans will be rehomed for their own safety.

It comes after the black swans went up the A379 past The Gresham House Inn to Coastguards on Saturday morning (18 March).

They were returned to the Lawn uninjured, but waterfowl wardens and Dawlish Town Council have decided to move them to a "relatively local home".

A Dawlish Waterfowl spokesperson said: "These young black swans which had been hand-reared were in real danger and a potential hazard to traffic.

"They cannot be moved to the aviary due to their size and they are used to roaming.

"After much thought a decision has now been taken by wardens with the Town Council to rehome them.

"Regular followers will know we have used a relatively local home before to rehome a couple of the black swans and these will now be joining them.

"This decision has been made to keep them safe longer-term."

The newly hatched cygnets, of which five remain, are reportedly thriving.
