Dawlish: Work on rockfall shelter extension at Parson's Tunnel continues

Work to construct a 209m extension to the rockfall shelter north of Parson's Tunnel is underway, with some minor travel disruption.

The resurfacing and reconstruction of platforms at Dawlish Railway Station is also underway and is expected to be completed this weekend (26-27 February).

The £37.4m rockfall shelter extension project at Parson's Tunnel will help protect trains from falling debris from the cliffs above. The design of the rockfall shelter extension will reportedly be open on one side to allow passengers to see out the window.

Work on the foundations has been the most evident, with specialist road-rail vehicles helping install pilings for support from the tracks.

New pipes to help pump concrete under the track and into the pile cases have also been installed on the cliff face.

Overnight engineering work between Dawlish and Holcombe began on 24 January, and the railway line will remain closed on Monday and Thursday nights until 17 March.

Regular trains have not been affected, but the sleeper service between London Paddington and Penzance has not been running on the two weekdays specified. The 10.02pm service from Paddington to Newton Abbot via Bath and Bristol has also been terminating at Exeter St Davids.
