Dawlish: Summer solstice times

Local News by Will Goddard 20th Jun 2021

The summer solstice is almost upon us, but what is it, and when will it take place?

What is the summer solstice?

It happens when one of the Earth's magnetic poles tilts as far as it can towards the sun.

Because of this, the sun will be in the highest position it can go in the sky, and it will be the longest day of the year.

In fact, in many northern regions such as Siberia and Canada the sun does not set at all for as many as eight weeks.

When will it take place?

The summer solstice takes place each year on 21 June.

In Dawlish, the sun will rise at 05.01am and set at 9.30pm - that's 16 hours and 29 minutes of daylight.

In other Nub News towns, Falmouth to the west will see the sun rise at 05.10am, whereas Felixstowe to the east will see it at 04.34am.
