Two Dawlish primary schools are taking part in a sponsored challenge called 'Walk to the Moon' to raise school fees for three Ugandan children.

Walking up to a mile a day around their play areas, pupils from Gatehouse Primary Academy and Westcliff Primary Academy have clocked up over 88,000 miles collectively so far.

The funds raised will go towards the education of the Ugandan children via charity Edukid, which helps disadvantaged children and families access education in Cambodia and Uganda.

A spokesperson for the schools said: "Students walk up to a mile a day around their respective play areas and are being sponsored to do so. The number of miles walked is then added up at the end and combined, and the total will hopefully go some way to reaching the moon.

"When they get back to school on 17 April they will have that week to clock up as many miles as possible.

"The schools have been walking rain or shine up to a mile a day around their respective school grounds.

"Both schools recently met some Ugandan students over Skype. It was a wonderful cultural exchange of questions, ideas and insights!"

The pupils began their efforts on 6 March and will finish on 21 April. So far, they have raised £340 on JustGiving with a target of £720.
