Exeter Port Authority is set to move a number of navigation buoys on the approach to the Exe Estuary from the sea tomorrow (Tuesday 10 March).

It comes after a hydrographic survey in the estuary approaches found that the navigable channel into the River Exe had moved 'significantly' to the east.

Harbour staff and a specialist contractor will be moving buoys 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and the safe water mark to new positions on Tuesday 10 May, and possibly 11 May too if necessary.

Mariners are warned to take 'extreme care' when entering or leaving the River Exe while the work is underway.

A Port Authority spokesperson said: "Notice is hereby given that a hydrographic survey conducted in the estuary approaches shows that the channel into the River Exe has moved significantly eastward of the current charted depths.

"Harbour staff and a specialist contractor will be moving the existing aids to navigation to new positions that will mark where the channel has naturally developed.

"The numbered navigation marks that will be moved are; No's 1,2,3,4,5,6,8 plus the safe water mark.

"This work will be done on the 10th of May, and possibly the 11th if required.

"Mariners are advised to take extreme care when entering or leaving the River Exe whilst the above work is being undertaken, keep clear of the vessels involved in the work and for any questions on the day whilst navigating the approaches, call the Exeter Port Authority on VHF Ch 12."
