Firefighters from Dawlish and Teignmouth were among those who tackled a blaze at a pub with a thatched roof in Ogwell on Friday evening.

The thatch went up in flames at around 4.30pm, and 80 firefighters from the surrounding area were mobilised to the scene.

At first the crews were able to enter the building to salvage valuable items, but as the fire took hold they had to stay outside and try to stop the building from collapsing.

To contain the fire, they removed parts of the thatch that were not yet ablaze, and sprayed nearby properties that also have thatched roofs with compressed air foam to protect them from flying embers.

The operation continued for several hours, with relief crews from further afield being brought in at around 10.30pm.

Firefighters remained at the scene all night, damping down and checking for hotspots.

The roof of the pub has been completely destroyed by the fire and the rest of the property has been damaged by water, heat and smoke.
