A residents' petition is calling for parking restrictions along a narrow road in Dawlish.

On Thursday (6 October), local councillor Martin Wrigley (Lib Dem) handed it to a full meeting of Devon County Council on behalf of local residents of Stockton Hill in the town.

The road helps link a number of residential streets to the north of Dawlish with the lower, main part of the town.

Presenting the petition, which has received between 100 and 200 signatures, Cllr Wrigley said: "It's a narrow lane on a hill with a blind corner. It's a principal route used by schoolchildren on a daily basis as the main route to the local schools and has no pavements."

A similar petition calling for restrictions along the road was rejected last year, the council's chairman said.

Cllr Wrigley, who will be the Lib Dem candidate for the area at the next general election, added: "The issue that the residents wish to see solved is the obstruction of visibility by vans and large vehicles parking on the bend.

"Such parking causes pedestrians to have to step out into the road and put themselves in danger, as well as often making it nigh-on impossible for other vehicles to pass.

"The site is in need of restrictions to parking and this petition shows the strength of feeling of local residents. It's been done in person by local residents and, indeed, when I went to discuss this with them, a group of 30 or 40 local residents suddenly arrived keen to see a solution."

Devon County Council will consider the petition in due course.
