A banner has been unveiled at Dawlish Warren beach to literally fly the flag for its good water quality and visitor facilities.

Teignbridge councillors Linda Goodman-Bradbury, Andrew McGregor and Martin Wrigley were celebrating the 21st year that the beach has been recognised with Blue Flag status.

The Blue Flag criteria are divided into four categories with a total of 33 individual targets. These main categories are:

  • Environmental Education and Information: Information on the Blue Flag award itself and details of the water quality. A beach map including locations of facilities must also be displayed.
  • Water Quality: The most important stipulation is that no industrial, waste-water or sewage-related discharges should affect the beach.
  • Environmental Management: This includes the administrative side of things as well as keeping the beach clean. It also states there must be toilets available to the public.
  • Safety and Services: At the top of the list here is the beach should be patrolled by lifeguards. Other criteria include availability of drinking water and accessibility features.

The Teignbridge District Council members for Dawlish North-East ward welcomed the Blue Flag award.

Cllr Linda Petherick said:"Many congratulations on getting the blue flag. Residents of Dawlish are very proud that we manage to maintain this award and it is very beneficial for the tourism trade at the Warren just what we need to launch us into the summer season."

Cllr Linda Goodman-Bradbury said: ""With the easing of restrictions on the 17th May, this award is just the additional boost that Dawlish Warren needs to encourage visitors to our safe and clean holiday beaches. Congratulations."

Cllr Martin Wrigley said: "It's great to have our fantastic Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth beaches recognised by the prestigious Blue Flag. It's a tribute to all those who work hard to protect our environment, from the regular beach cleans, the local wardens and rangers to the innovative policy setting in our councils.

"I look forward to a great summer with plenty of people enjoying our local area and the special place that is Dawlish Parish."
