Branscombe to Beer route voted one of best UK walks
East Devon's Branscombe to Beer route has been voted as one of Britain's best walks.
National consumer experts Which? recently curated a long list of the nation's favourite and most well-trodden, single-day walks, voting the Branscombe to Beer route as the 29th best place to walk in the UK.
The survey was carried out by 1,807 Which? panel members in December 2021, to which the local coastal route received 5 stars for its food and drink, as well as top marks for its peace and quiet rating.
The six-mile walk (three miles each way) was given a three out of five rating for its difficulty, and four stars for its scenery. Whilst its way-marking, visitor facilities, range of wildlife and as a place of interest received three stars.
According to the survey, its main area for improvement was its accessibility for those in wheelchairs or with prams.
Overall, the Branscombe to Beer route was awarded an 80 per cent mark for its total walk score. This score is made up of a combination of both overall satisfaction and how likely people are to recommend the walk.
Claiming the top spot was Yorkshire's Malham Cove and Gordale Scar. The seven-and-a-half-mile route achieved an 89 per cent walk score.
Visitors were impressed by the cove's amphitheatre-shaped cliffs which lead up to a limestone pavement, where a scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was filmed. Its second striking geological feature, Gordale Scar, is a narrow ravine enclosed by sheer walls 100 metres high.
The Yorkshire route received the full five stars for scenery and places of interest. It was rated four out of five for difficulty - where one is easy and five is suitable for experienced walkers only - meaning it is a suitable route for more regular ramblers.
The overall results of the survey revealed that the Lake District proved the most popular region for high quality walks, claiming six spots in the table. The Peak District, Cornwall and Northumberland each boast three of the best walks, whilst Dorset, Snowdonia, London, Surrey and the North York Moors followed closely behind.
