Black swan egg laid in Dawlish
A pair of black swans have nested and at least one egg has been laid at the time of writing on the small island in Dawlish Water at Tuck's Plot.
Eggs had also been laid in the same spot in January last year, but they were removed to hatch in the waterfowl compound in February after the male swan of the breeding pair was killed by a dog.
Five cygnets then hatched at the compound on Brunswick Place and were later released into Dawlish Water. The only male cygnet of the five was killed by an animal shortly afterwards.
A new adult male swan, named Bert, was introduced in March in the hope that it would pair up with the adult female.
Dawlish Beach Cams, which has a live-view camera on location, said: "Bertie's persistence has paid off.
"It took her a long time to accept him but we can now tell you the news that we have one egg on Tuck's Plot nest.
"There's a long way to go but you can watch them live on our dedicated black swan camera."
