More than 800 people have signed a petition for a variable speed limit and 'children crossing' signs with hazard lights near Dawlish College.

The proposed variable speed limit would cover the stretch of the A379 Exeter Road before and after the junction with Elm Grove Road, and be enforced at peak times when children travel to school. The speed limit is currently 30mph.

The signs with hazard lights would be placed at both zebra crossings near the junction - again activated at peak times.

At the time of writing, 857 people have signed the petition. The petitioners will send it to Devon County Council when they have enough signatures.

Daniella Jordan, who started the petition, wrote: "There have been a number of devastating accidents on the zebra crossings, involving pedestrians crossing the road to go to and from school, both in the morning and afternoon.

"We are sure that by reducing the speed limit at peak times, and installing 'school crossing' flashing lights, this would help focus drivers' attention on the scores of children and adults crossing the main Exeter road. This focus will help lower the number of accidents and the severity of injuries."

A teenage boy was taken to hospital with a serious arm injury after a collision with a car on Exeter Road on Friday 14 January.
