Dawlish: New cygnets hatch after eggs taken to waterfowl compound

By Will Goddard 1st Mar 2022

Five cygnets have now hatched at the waterfowl compound on Brunswick Place.

It comes after six of seven eggs at the nest on the small island at Tuck's Plot in Dawlish Water were removed after a male swan was killed by a dog last month.

The five new cygnets are still in the incubator, and are being monitored by wardens.

Waterfowl Warden Steve said: "One [egg in the nest] was definitely no good. The sixth one [we recovered] was no good either.

"Normally with such a big clutch, you don't get them all hatch anyway. Five is a good number.

"[We can't tell if they're male or female] at this stage, not without DNA testing.

"They seem in good condition and healthy."

The cygnets had briefly been placed in the window but were returned to an incubator as they would not stay under the heat lamp.
