Dawlish and District U3A: Exeter City FC talk
The Manor House, Dawlish
Community Events
UNTIL Monday 15th May
Nick Hawker, Executive Chair of Exeter City FC Board of Directors, will be talking to Dawlish & District u3a members and guests about the considerable challenges and opportunities faced by a relatively small football club in the current climate. Exeter City FC plays a significant role in the life of Exeter and the surrounding area, and not just one affecting football fans.
Over the years, the Grecians as they are known have had a chequered history, facing having to go out of business on more than one occasion. It has an interesting 'community' ownership model which is in distinct contrast with the clubs we hear so much about who are owned effectively by film stars, foreign billionaires and even governments, sometimes with a questionable record on human rights and other matters. The Grecians are currently enjoying a period of success having been promoted to League One but that will bring its own challenges.
The role of sports organisations of all sorts is being scrutinised these days to ensure they are accessible to all members of the community, as spectators and participants, and provide opportunities for people with no discrimination on grounds of age, gender or any other protected characteristics. We hear much about women and girls' football, and also sport for the disabled. Perhaps Mr Hawker may touch on matters such as these.
Even though you may not be football fan, or you are a devoted supporter of another team this is a talk which might appeal to many non-members, so please feel welcome to join us at the Manor House, Dawlish, at 3.45pm.
