Dawlish residents are being invited to contribute to festive hampers for the crews of the cruise liners that will be moored off the coast over Christmas.

For the last few months several huge ships that would normally accommodate thousands of passengers and staff have been anchored in Torbay and Lyme Bay with skeleton crews, after Covid-19 put a stop to cruise holidays.

Dawlish's nearest animal rescue centre has launched an online Christmas appeal, in place of the visitor event it would usually hold during the festive season.

Animals In Distress at Ipplepen normally has a Christmas Giving Evening, in which the centre is decorated and people can come along, bring presents for the animals, tour the centre and enjoy refreshments.

There'll be late-night Christmas shopping in Dawlish on the first Friday after lockdown ends, with businesses being encouraged to stay open well into the evening.

The idea is to attract shoppers into the town on the evening of Friday, December 4, to enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations, and also to extend shopping hours to make social distancing easier.

Teignbridge Council's leader Cllr Alan Connett wants to help pubs that cannot reopen

Pubs banned from reopening under the Tier 2 Covid-19 restrictions are being urged to contact Teignbridge District Council, which may be able to help them find a way forward.

The leader of the council, Cllr Alan Connett, said he knew the landlords of pubs not currently serving food were going to be 'hugely disappointed' that they would be unable to open when lockdown ends.
