January 2022 was significantly drier than average but with near average sunshine and temperature.
The first ten days of the month were changeable with some rain or showers and in the main rather cloudy skies. This was associated with fairly mild west or southwest winds which were interrupted temporarily on the 5th and 6th as colder northerly winds followed a cold front southwards across the UK. The colder air produced the first frost of the year on the 5th but also brought some welcome sunshine. From the 11th, High pressure became dominant and this brought a good deal of dry weather to the district. Around mid-month, however, weak weather systems did bring a little rain and there was an odd patch of light rain later in the month too. The High, with a pressure above 1040millibars, became slow moving over SW England between the 20th and 24th. This resulted in some rather chilly days and on the 21st the coldest morning of the month, with a frost even right on the coast.
