A council tax rise of 2.99 per cent has been approved by Devon County Council, with its Conservative leader warning that "austerity has not gone away."

The rise means the yearly bill for a band D property will go up by £45.18 to £1,556.46 from April. This excludes increases to other parts of the tax that fund district councils, police and the fire service.

The mayor of Dawlish is set to host a dinner to raise money for the charities she sponsors.

The three-course dinner will be held at the Mount Pleasant Inn in Dawlish Warren on 12 March, and Dawlish Mayor Cllr Val Mawhood will also be holding a bingo event and pig race before the end of her term in May this year.

Update: Do not travel, GWR says

Update: GWR has now advised against all travel as it is 'unable to run trains across the majority of our network'.

Great Western Railway has issued a warning for people not to travel unless essential today (Friday 18 February) as Storm Eunice makes landfall in the UK.
