The potential for installing on-street rapid chargers for electric vehicles in Dawlish is being explored by the town council.
This week councillors discussed a proposal from Gamma Energy, a partner agency of Devon County Council, who would provide the charging points.
The company is offering two chargers, which would each serve two parking bays.
These are separate from the chargers Teignbridge Council is planning to install in the Barton Hill car park, and – if it gets Government funding - in other on-street locations Electric car charging points to be installed in Dawlish.
The proposal is in its very early stages, with the town council being asked whether it supports the idea, and if so, to suggest possible sites – although it's understood that the town council wouldn't have the final say on where the charging points would be sited.
Councillors unanimously voted in support of the proposal and discussed several possible sites for the charging points, including Marine Parade, John Nash Drive and Sandy Lane. They said it was important not to locate charging points near schools, where they could increase the congestion during school run times.
Following the town council meeting on Wednesday, April 7, the town clerk has sent a list of suggested sites to Gamma Energy, and the council expects to hear more about the proposals in the near future.
