A Dawlish Warren pub and restaurant is among those offering free meals to children during half-term week.

The Boathouse will provide takeaway hot lunches every day if parents book in advance via email.

Food outlets across the county have come together to help struggling families after MPs voted not to back footballer Marcus Rashford's campaign to give out free school meal vouchers beyond termtime.

Local Conservative MP Anne-Marie Morris went against her party by supporting Labour's motion to extend the provision of free meals in the holidays.

She posted on Twitter: "The ongoing pandemic has had a heavy impact on many across Teignbridge, bringing with it significant economic difficulties for many. This is why I am supporting the motion calling for the continuation of direct funding for FSM over school holidays until Easter 2021.

"This time-limited measure is a perfectly sensible response as we deal with the economic consequences of Covid-19. Longer-term I believe it is right that those eligible should be supported through the Holidays & Activities Food Programme and the Universal Credit system."

The Boathouse team took to Facebook to announce their offer to help feed children during half-term.

They said: "We know that there a lot of children locally that rely on their free school dinners as a source of a hot daily meal. We will be doing our bit to help out a little during next week's half term.

"We will be offering sausages and chips or fish fingers and chips with a portion of fruit and a juice drink.

"These will be available from Monday the 26th through until Friday 30th between 11.30am and 12.30pm. This is a takeaway option only.

"Please email Sally before 9.30am to book a free children's meal.

"To ensure that these lunches go to the right people all we ask is to show proof of address and to have your child/children with you upon collection.

As you walk towards the Boathouse you will see a sign to the right of the building stating 'Pick up point' where a member of the team will deliver your parcels."

If any other food outlets are offering free food for children during half term, let Dawlish Nub News know: email [email protected] and I'll help spread the word.
