Teignmouth Lido will reopen this summer, the district council has confirmed - but it's uncertain exactly when.
There is no fixed reopening date yet, but Teignbridge District Council has said it aims to have it ready for the school summer holidays (which begin, for example, from 23 July for Teignmouth Community School).
The heated 25m open-air pool at Eastcliff Walk has been closed for the past two years. It was shut in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and then in 2021 for 'decarbonisation' works.
The works, funded by a £2.3m grant, are designed to make the council's leisure facilities more eco-friendly. Newton Abbot Leisure Centre, Broadmeadow Sports Centre (in Teignmouth), and Teignmouth Lido have all been having new solar power systems installed alongside other improvements.
At Teignmouth Lido, a new air source heat pump system to heat the pool has been put in to replace the previous gas boiler. New pool circulation pumps have also been installed.
The original deadline under the terms of the grant funding was September 2021, which led to the lido's closure last summer.
A spokesperson for Teignbridge District Council said: "We're waiting for the decarbonisation work to be completed [at the lido], but are getting everything lined up – including recruiting staff and undergoing the annual maintenance – so that we can open as soon as possible.
"We don't have a firm date yet as it's dependent on a number of factors out of our control – such as the power switch-on – but we're aiming to be open by the school summer holidays."
The lido was first opened in 1976.
