A planning application to turn the former Beachcomber cafe on Teignmouth seafront into an all-day eatery has been approved.

The building, which was damaged by a fire in 2017, will be renamed 'The Captain's Table'.

Work can now get underway on the 100-seater restaurant, bar area, and takeaway service fronting onto the Den.

The public toilets on the ground floor (but not the disabled WC) will be closed from 1 November and replaced pre-emptively with temporary loos on the Den.

The temporary toilets will reportedly stay there until Teignmouth Town Council opens new public toilets at the nearby former aquarium (which is expected to be spring 2024).

Cllr Richard Keeling said: "This is an important step in establishing a landmark venue in Teignmouth that both local people and visitors will want to use. It also enables building work to be carried out over the winter months so that the new Captain's Table will hopefully be able to open next spring or summer.

"Without closing the public WCs in the building, this would not be possible and so as to avoid unnecessary delays we are establishing modern temporary loos on The Den situated by the building."

Teignbridge District Council, which owns the building, can now finalise the 20-year lease for the building with the new leaseholders of the building, who own Teignmouth's Finn McCools restaurant and Woolacombe's Captain's Table.
