Dawlish Town Council agreed to apply to Devon County Council for 20mph limits on some roads in the area on Wednesday (11 January).

The roads which it will ask to have 20mph limits for in Dawlish include (but are not limited to) the A379 through the town centre, The Strand, Brunswick Place, Alexandra Road, Church Street, Elm Grove Road, Elm Grove Drive, Westcliff Road, Queen Street, Park Road, Shutterton Lane, and Weech Road.

Cllr Gary Taylor said: "Certainly the town centre itself with its historic, very narrow roads, lots of people, holidaymakers walking around, children going to school tend to gravitate towards that."

Cllr Val Mawhood added: "I always joke that you don't need to do a driving test.

"You just need to drive from Church Street down Old Town Street through The Strand and up Iddesleigh Terrace onto the main road, and you've passed your test because people over the doors in front of you, they pull out in front of you, people push wheelchairs or pushchairs in front of you."

The council also agreed to apply for 20mph limits in Cockwood and the A379 through Holcombe as well as Hall Lane and Fordens Lane.

Cllr Martin Wrigley said: "There clearly is no problem including the A379 section since that is done through Starcross already. So there is a precedent for that."

There is already a 20mph limit in the Oak Hill area of Dawlish.

Devon County Council has authority for roads and highways, so it will make the final decision on whether to change the speed limits.
