Working smoke alarms saved the life of a Dawlish individual, local firefighters have said.

Crews were called to a detached property just before midnight on Monday (13 March), where they put out a fire involving the electrical supply to the boiler on the ground floor.

The occupant was woken up by smoke alarms, closed doors on the fire, and was able to get out safely.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Working smoke alarms saved this person's life.

"They were woken up and were able to save their pets and close doors before evacuating safely.

"Closing doors on a fire can significantly reduce fire spread and property damage.

"The fire caused approximately 25 per cent fire damage and 60 per cent smoke damage to the area."

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental.
