Anne Marie Morris weekly column: Constituency changes | Opinion

29th Jul 2021 | Local News

As many of you will be aware, last month, the Boundary Commission for England published their initial proposals for update constituency boundaries from the next election.

As a constituency, we are fortunate to be remaining pretty much identical to the current boundary map, apart from minor changes to realign with changes to local government ward boundaries.

Having said that, boundary proposals aren't just about the geography of the constituencies, but also what they are called.

As I have made clear over the last 11 years, whilst Newton Abbot is the largest town in the constituency, it is one of a number of communities and having the constituency named 'Newton Abbot' excludes the other towns such as Teignmouth and Dawlish and also the numerous villages across the patch.

Many of you still refer to the constituency as 'Teignbridge' and apart from official documentation where I have to use 'Newton Abbot', I tend to refer to Teignbridge in both the House of Commons and in the media.

I know a number of you share my belief that the constituency should revert to being called Teignbridge and therefore I would encourage you to make your views known to the Boundary Commission.

If you believe this should be the case (or don't for that matter) or have any other views on the proposals, then the consultation website is open until Tuesday 2nd August and can be found here: https://www.bcereviews.org.uk/
