CCTV has been installed at Dawlish railway line, following several reports of people trespassing on the track.

Network Rail described the incidents as 'shocking' and said the culprits were showing 'blatant disregard for their own and other people's safety'.

In one case a train driver had to stop because there were people walking along the railway track.

There were also cases of people going on to the sea wall construction site.

This week Network Rail announced on social media that it had put a CCTV recording system near the Coastguard breakwater 'for the purposes of safety and the prevention of crime'.

A spokesman for the company told Dawlish Nub News: "The camera is monitored regularly by Network Rail staff to identify any trespassers both onto the railway and sea wall construction site.

"We work closely with the British Transport Police and will be looking to identify any individuals who do illegally trespass, where they could be summoned to court and fined up to £1000."

Network Rail's website explains that trespassing is taken very seriously – not only because of the danger to those doing it, but also because it disrupts the rail transport system.

It says: "When we see someone trespassing, we have to stop all trains in the vicinity to remove trespassers, check for damage and clear blockages.

"This not only delays nearby trains, but also has a knock-on effect on trains across the network, sometimes lasting for hours."
