An eight-week consultation has now begun as of 12pm today (Monday 14 June) for residents to give their views on the site options for new homes and businesses in Teignbridge.

Teignbridge District Council has to meet government requirements of building at least 751 new homes per year, but is also seeking to preserve the character of communities in the district.

More than 100 sites have been identified as potential sites for future housing as part of the Teignbridge Local Plan that will run until 2040 - but not all of them will be used, as the council only wants to build on sites that would be the 'least damaging' to communities.

Councillor Gary Taylor, the Executive member for Planning, said: "Few if any local people want to see this level of development but we have no option but to prepare a plan that can deliver the Government's required housing growth for our district.

"An up-to-date local plan will help us stop development in inappropriate locations and avoid unplanned development in open countryside through planning appeals.

"No decisions have been taken on any site option development so the consultation is an opportunity for people to get involved, look closely at the sites and give us their local perspective."

Where are the proposed sites?

Click here to see the proposed sites for Dawlish and Teignmouth in detail, which include Dawlish North, Langdon Hospital, Land at Warren Farm, Land at Teignmouth Road, Redundant Listed Buildings at 13 Weech Road, Daw Vale Nursing Home, Parking/grassed area to east of 1 - 50 Lanherne, Commercial buildings south of Haldon Terrace, Hospital Hill, Residential Garden at Badlake Hill/Weech Road, Garden of Lyme Acre, Part of Land at Buddleford Farm, and Higher Holcombe Farm.

The majority of site options are near towns to reduce climate impact and give more access to services, employment, and public transport.

The Heart of Teignbridge area around Newton Abbot has provisionally been allocated 2,920 homes, with the edge of Exeter for a further 1,800 homes, around 1,000 homes in Dawlish, 100 homes in Teignmouth, 250 homes in Bovey Tracey, 250 homes in Ashburton, and 960 homes in the villages.

Chudleigh, Bickington, Ide and Shaldon however will not see any sites allocated as nowhere suitable was identified.
