A camper van became stranded at the ford on Lower Dawlish Water Road at around 08:54am today (28 June) after heavy rainfall caused the stream to flood.

The water trapped one of the occupants and their dog before they could get out, but the other person managed to get to safety.

The fire service advised for the occupant to stay inside the van and wait for the fire crews for their own safety.

Dawlish firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes, and together with another crew from Teignmouth they put on water safety suits and entered the water in a shallower and calmer area and rescued the person and the dog uninjured.

They then made the vehicle safe, and left it with the owners.
