Two walkers had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in mud at Mamhead on Sunday, February 28.

The pair had been walking on a public footpath in farmland when they got into difficulties.

They called for help at 12.50pm, when they had sunk to their knees in the mud. By the time the firefighters arrived they were waist-deep.

Two fire appliances and a 4x4 vehicle attended, with specialist equipment and a Special Rescue Officer.

The firefighters wore wading suits and used mud mats to reach them. They then used a machine that blew compressed air into the mud, to create an air pocket so that they could slide out.

The walkers were moved across the mud mats to safety and checked over, but were uninjured.
