Man charged with murder after death of Dawlish church leader

A man has appeared in court charged with murder following the death of 53-year-old Hazel Huggins, who was on the leadership team at Hope Church in Dawlish.

Police were called to a property in Ilbert Street in Plymouth at around 4.15pm on Saturday (29 July) following reports of concern for the welfare of a woman.

Officers forced entry to the address and emergency first aid was performed but Hazel Huggins died at the scene.

Bradley Huggins, 24, of Ilbert Street, Plymouth, has been charged with murder and appeared before Plymouth Magistrates' Court today and is due to appear before Plymouth Crown Court on Tuesday (1 August).

'A bright shining light'

Hazel's family said in a statement: "Hazel was a bright shining light and loved by many. The family are grieving their loss and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."

Mayor of Dawlish Rosie Dawson said: "We are incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of Hazel Huggins.

"She was a beautifully nurturing, positive and compassionate light in our community, particularly at Hope Church. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and church community."

Service of lament

Hope Church will hold a short service of lament on Tuesday (1 August) at 7pm at the Hope Centre in Dawlish.

All who knew Hazel are welcome, including people of any faith or none, the church said.
